How to know your dog is registered

How to tell a genuine JKC Registration Card and Pedigree from a piece of printed paper.

Plate 25 · The cardA genuine JKC Registration Card and Pedigree side by side, overhead, sharp enough to read every field. This is the single most important photograph on the site.

A registered puppy leaves the breeder with two documents in hand: a Registration Card and a Pedigree. Not a promise that they will follow in a few weeks. In hand.

Four things to check

  • The registration number is on the register. Search it here before you pay. If it does not come back, nothing else on the card matters.
  • The details on the card match the dog. Breed, sex, date of birth, colour and markings. A card for a litter sibling is still a forged sale.
  • The sire and dam are named and registered. Both parents must be on the register for a litter to be recordable. Check both numbers, not just the puppy’s.
  • The breeder’s affix matches the seller. If the person selling you the dog is not the recorded breeder, ask why, and ask for the transfer.

What is not proof

A vaccination card is not registration. A photograph of a pedigree on a phone is not registration. A certificate from a registry you have never heard of, with an impressive seal and a website registered last year, is not registration — there are several of these operating in Jamaica and they exist precisely because the real thing has value.

If something is wrong

Do not pay, and tell us. The club can only act on what it hears about, and a pattern of complaints about one seller is what allows the board to act. Send the registration number, the seller’s name and any photographs of the documents you were shown.

If you already bought the dog

Your dog is still your dog, and none of this reflects on it. What it means is that the animal cannot be shown, cannot be bred from within the register, and was probably not worth what you paid. Contact the office anyway — in some cases a dog with verifiable registered parents can still be recorded.
